RAWALPINDI / ISLAMABAD / BANNU / PESHAWAR / KARACHI / MIRAMSHAH: After a long period of speculation, which also included attempts at peace talks, Pakistan on June 15 launched a military operation against militants in the troubled North Waziristan agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).
On its 15th day, a new phase of the offensive began, with the military launching a ground operation in Miramshah – the main town of North Waziristan.

Pakistan reiterated  on Thursday that the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) of North Waziristan was an internal matter and it had not asked for any international assistance.
“We have very clear instructions from the prime minister [to not seek external assistance],” Foreign Office Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said during her weekly press briefing.

Almost a month after Operation Zarb-e-Azb was formally started in mid June, the army allowed local and international media to visit Miramshah in North Waziristan, main centre for militants.
During a media briefing, DG ISPR Maj-Gen Bajwa said that they had also discovered the under ground tunnels that the militants had constructed in the area.
“This [Miramshah] was one of their major base, we have dislodged them from here and now they on the run,” said Bajwa.

Eighty per cent of Miramshah has been cleared of terrorists, according to the operation commander, Express News reported

More than 800,000 people have fled the major military offensive in North Waziristan, officials said.
“Some 833,274 people or 66,726 migrating families from North Waziristan were registered in cities of Bannu and Peshawar until Tuesday evening,” Arshad Khan, FDMA director general,  told AFP.
Khan said 361,459 of the displaced were children and 248,633 women.

Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said that 400 terrorists have so far been killed in the operation.
In an interview with Radio Pakistan, the minister further said that 20 soldiers were killed in the line of duty.

Pakistan Air Force jet planes bombed militant hideouts in North Waziristan’s Degan area, killing 13 suspected militants, Express Newsreported quoting ISPR.
“Seven terrorist hideouts were destroyed and 13 terrorists were killed, including foreigners, by jet aircraft strikes in Degan in North Waziristan Agency today,” a military statement told AFP.
So far 399 militants and 20 soldiers have been killed in the offensive, according to the military.

Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif visited troops on the front lines in North Waziristan today, and lauded them for their courage, dedication and high state of morale, according to an ISPR press release.
Expressing his satisfaction with the ongoing operation so far, he commended the entire chain of command for their determined efforts in planning, preparation, mobilisation and execution of the operation.
The army chief reiterated emphasis on the need to eliminate all foreign and local terrorists.
Paying tribute to the internally displaced persons (IDPs) for their sacrifices to restore writ of the state, COAS acknowledged the national spirit and support forthcoming for them from across the country.

The registration of internally displaced persons (IDPs), who migrated from North Waziristan due to the military operation against terrorists, started in Peshawar on Monday.
Fata Disaster Management Authority (FDMA) spokesperson told APP that a registration centre has been set up at Government College of Commerce and Management Sciences No 2, where registration of IDPs will continue till 3pm everyday.

The United States has extended an assistance of $31 million, while the government of United Arab Emirates (UAE) has released $20.5 million for the internally displaced persons (IDPs) of North Wazirstan on humanitarian grounds.
According to a detailed report submitted to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, so far 572,529 IDPs, belonging to 44,633 families, have been registered since the beginning of the Zarb-e-Azb operation in mid June, 2014.

Jet planes bombed hideouts of suspected militants in Miramshah, Express News reported, quoting ISPR.
Several suspected foreign militants – mostly Uzbeks – reportedly died in the air strikes that took place early on Saturday morning, according to an ISPR press release.
Five hideouts, as well as a large amount of weapons, were destroyed in the latest bombing, the statement added.

The Economic Coordination Committee of the government has approved release of 60,000 metric tonnes of wheat for distribution among IDPs. A committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Minister for SAFRON Lt Gen Abdul Qadir Baloch to work out a distribution mechanism.

The government has decided to launch a three-day anti-polio drive in Bannu from Saturday, Radio Pakistan reported.
The drive is aimed at administrating polio drops to the children of IDPs. Besides IDPs, 150,000 local children will also be administered polio drops.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed relevant authorities to speed up relief efforts. “For us helping our people displaced because of Zarb-e-Azb is number one issue and we will do our level best to help them.”
Minister for States and Frontier Regions Abdul Qadir Baloch told the prime minister that so far 566,000 IDPs have been registered and that cash distribution will start from July 8, 2014, Radio Pakistan reported.
However, the PDMA has said that 576,929 IDPs have been registered at camps in Bannu. In the meanwhile, the FDMA says it has distributed Rs329.568 million among 27,668 registered IDPs so far.

Bodies of seven suspected militants were recovered in Darpa Khel area of Mirali.
According to a security official, security forces advanced from Mirali and Miramshah Bazaar towards the outskirts of the agency after destroying three militant hideouts in Mirali. He added that one of the destroyed hideouts belonged to foreign militants.

The military provided details of the meeting with Afghan defence and intelligence officials in a press release.
The Pakistan Army raised the issue of “terrorist sanctuaries” in eastern Kunar and Nuristan provinces in Afghanistan and attacks on Pakistani border villages and posts from those sanctuaries with top Afghan defence and intelligence officials on Thursday, the military said.

Pakistan Navy has dispatched its first consignment of goods for IDPs. 41 tonnes of dry ration from Karachi and Islamabad for IDPs was loaded onto trucks and dispatched.
The Navy continues to collect ration packages comprising flour, rice, sugar, lentils, cooking oil, dry milk and tea at special camps established in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

ISPR spokesperson Major General Asim Bajwa tweeted that three IED factories, a suicide bomber training centre and a media facility was discovered during the operation.
Six IEDs attached to four laptops, terrorism related literature and cache of rockets were also recovered.
The spokesperson said terrorists have laid extensive IEDs in Miranshah and troops are busy in sweeping the streets for the booby traps.

In a veiled reference to former DG ISPR Athar Abbas’ statement two days go, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar said that the Pakistan Army is fighting a war for the future of Pakistan, and retired army officials should not make the military operation a point of dispute through their statements, Express News reported.

The army reiterated on Tuesday its longstanding demand of the Afghan government to dismantle sanctuaries of the Pakistani Taliban leadership on its side of the border for the success of the ongoing military offensive in North Waziristan.
“We expect Afghan security forces will either eliminate or handover Pakistani Taliban chief Mullah Fazlullah, who controls his fighters from across the border,” military spokesperson Major General Asim Bajwa said at a briefing for Islamabad-based foreign media.
Minister for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) Abdul Qadir Baloch  said that anybody involved in terrorist activities will be eliminated irrespective of the group they belong to.
“They cannot escape,” the DG ISPR said. “It’s very clear that those left inside are only terrorists.”

Troops moved on Miramshah, the main town in North Waziristan, around 9:30am, officials said, after two weeks of air strikes and artillery bombardment of insurgent targets, AFP reported.
Security officials in Miramshah told AFP troops moved on the town after six hours of artillery shelling, which began at 3:30am.
“They are using tanks and armoured vehicles for ground movement,” a security official said on condition of anonymity.
“The forces have also taken over the civil hospital in Miramshah and have destroyed four hideouts in the artillery firing,” he added.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander of Miranshah, Commander Umer, was killed last night by security forces on the outskirts on Miranshah, Director General of Inter Services Public Relations (DG-ISPR) Asim Salim Bajwa said on social media.
He said that seven terrorists were killed early Saturday morning outside Miranshah. Bajwa also confirmed that 6 terrorist hideouts were destroyed last evening on the outskirts of Mirali killing 11 terrorists.
Bajwa confirmed that one prominent al Qaeda commander was also arrested. According to initial interrogation, the commander is an expert in explosives, improvised explosive devices (IED) and suicide belts.
Three terrorists were also arrested by security forces while they tried to cross Indus River near Mianwali. All crossings along the river have been sealed to keep terrorists from escaping.

Jets killed 17 militants in the latest raid on rebel hideouts, officials said on Saturday, AFP reports.
The planes bombarded hideouts in the Dargamandi and Chashma Gaon areas of North Waziristan late Friday, as aid agencies geared up relief efforts for refugees fleeing the military operation.
“Jet fighters bombarded militant hideouts, killing 17 rebels and destroying their six compounds,” a senior security official said.
A local intelligence official confirmed the militant casualties in the aerial attack.
According to AFP, nearly 370 militants and 12 security personnel have been killed in the offensive, although the number and identity of the victims are impossible to verify.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced a Ramazan package worth Rs20,000 for each family of internally displaced persons (IDPs) on Friday.
The prime minister made the announcement while addressing the IDPs in Bannu. The Ramazan package is in addition to the earlier announced monthly allowance of Rs20,000 which includes Rs5,000 for non-food items and Rs3,000 for rent.

In a press briefing to a select group of journalist, DG ISPR said the registration and evacuation process of IDPs has by and large been completed, our correspondent Kamran Yousaf reports.
At present, 466,00 IDPs have been registered, the DG ISPR said, adding that any civilians, who are still in the agency, can still be evacuated.
DG ISPR said the operation in N Waziristan is against all terrorist, including Haqqani network. He said there is a misconception that the army is facilitating certain militant groups, adding that there will be no discrimination in the operation and anyone who challenges the writ of the state will be taken to task.
“This is the beginning of the end of terrorism in Pakistan,” the DG ISPR added.
So far 327 terrorists have been killed and 45 hideouts have been destroyed in Operation Zarb-e-Azb. Ten soldiers have also been killed in the operation.

With 454,207 people having fled Zarb-e-Azb operation in North Waziristan, the minister of state for frontier regions (SAFRON) Abdul Qadir Baloch dispelled any notion of friction between the federal government and the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government on handling internally displaced persons (IDPs).
“We’ve got a good understanding with the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government,” said Baloch during a press conference on Tuesday.
The minister, tasked by the prime minister to oversee issues relating to IDPs, added that “the focal person is commissioner Bannu who comes under the K-P government, and I have no complaints from him and he has not issued any complaints either.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif directed the provision of every possible relief to the IDPs, Radio Pakistan reported.
The premier was chairing a meeting to review the situation of IDPs in Islamabad on Tuesday, and said that the government stands by the IDPs at this hour of trial.
Federal Ministers Abdul Qadir Baloch, Pervaiz Rashid, governor Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Director general military operations and director general Inter-Services Public Relations were in attendance during the meeting.

A suicide bomber in a car killed at least two troops in Spinwam village of North Waziristan agency.
“At least two soldiers and a civilian have embraced martyrdom,” a security official told AFP.
A military statement said that troops stopped the car suicide bomber 100 metres away from a checkpost near a hospital and the action averted major casualties.
The Ansarul Mujahideen militant group claimed responsibility, with spokesman Abu Baseer saying it was the start of a counter-offensive against the armed forces by the Taliban.

Further, 96,000 children will be vaccinated against various diseases while 64,000 will be vaccinated against polio for the first time in the IDP camps.
Two thousand tents have been established in Bannu to accommodate those migrating from North Waziristan. However, several families are choosing to live with their relatives in Bannu, Tank, Lakki and DI Khan.

All ranks of the army will donate one day’s pay to the IDPs, according to ISPR reports Express News.
DG ISPR Asim Bajwa has said that the army will also provide 30-days of ration for the IDPs.
So far, the government has registered 227,049 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected due to the ongoing operation in North Waziristan with the help of the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA).
According to the latest official data made available on Saturday, the government registered 15,757 families including 56,214 males, 70,465 females and 100,370 children.
Four rehabilitation centers have been established at Dera Ismail Khan, Laki Marwat, Bannu and Tank where IDPs would be processed through the verification of NADRA, according to officials.
A control room had also been established in the Ministry of States and Frontier Region to provide rehabilitation services for the IDPs that was working round-the-clock and providing every type of information.
A cash amount of Rs12,000 was being paid to every IDP family for food assistance, and NADRA was verifying them one by one at the established centers.

Thirty militants were killed in targeted strikes by jet aircrafts in Khyber and North Waziristan Agencies early morning today, according to an ISPR press release.
According to details, at 2am, jet aircraft destroyed two hideouts close to the Pak-Afghan border in Khyber Agency, killing 10 terrorists.
At 5am, three hideouts were destroyed in Hassu Khel in North Waziristan Agency, killing 15 militants. All strikes were made in areas where there is no civil population, the statement added.

“Three terrorist hideouts in the Qutab Khel area, on the outskirts of Miramshah were destroyed early morning today by gunship helicopters. It was an integrated action by cobra gunships, artillery and snipers. Twelve terrorists including foreigners were killed in the strikes. A huge cache of arms and ammunition was also destroyed,” an ISPR press release said.
The statement went on to add that while the operation progresses as per plan, terrorists inside cordoned area are making desperate attempts to flee from area. “Six attempts were foiled last night. Three locals who did not have any identity proof were apprehended while trying to flee from the cordon.”
Further, the statement added, another 24 suspects, who were trying to flee in the garb of IDPs, have been apprehended at various ‘strangulation’ check posts in Mirali and Miramshah.
An organised evacuation of IDPs continues from North Waziristan Agency towards FR Bannu, said the statement. “Till now 200,000 persons have been evacuated from the area. So far 11 families (92 individuals) have been enlisted in the IDP camp, Bakkakhel, Bannu.”
Further, 400 Afghan families left North Waziristan Agency for Afghanistan through Ghulam Khan Border village yesterday. They were provided all required administrative assistance.

The United Nations (UN) health agencies are supporting Pakistan’s humanitarian efforts to help thousands of people who have left North Waziristan where armed forces have launched an anti-terrorist operation, a UN spokesperson said on Thursday.

Civilians are streaming out of a tribal area in a two-pronged exodus ahead of an expected ground assault against militants, officials said Thursday, with many crossing the border into Afghanistan.
Tanks and troops have been mobilised and are expected to begin a new, more intense phase of the operation after a three-day window to allow civilians to leave the area, due to end on June 20.
Officials say that at least 113,000 people have fled North Waziristan since initial air strikes began in May.
“Afghan authorities have yet to prepare a final report but up to now they have provided assistance to 818 Pakistani families,” an official responsible for monitoring the displacement on the Afghan border told AFP.

Fifteen terrorists were killed in Zartatangi mountain heights, east of Miramshah by army gunship cobra helicopters last night when spotted. It was one of the main communication centres of terrorists, said an ISPR statement.
“In a separate sniper action, eight Uzbeks were killed around Miramshah while planting IEDs on the road Miramshah-Mirali,” the statement added.
Further, the ISPR statement said, areas housing terrorists in North Wazirstan Agency are continuously being cordoned off, while terrorists’ attempts to flee the area have been foiled.
“Today, evacuation of civil population from Miramshah and Ghulam Khan started. Check points have been established at various places where IDPs are being provided all administrative support including food items and medicine by security forces,” said the statement.
Furthermore, it added that the number of registration points at Saidgai Post have been increased to 20 — 10 each for men and women, for speedy and organised evacuation.  IDP camps at Bannu have also been established, the ISPR said in its statement.

All necessary arrangements to provide maximum relief to the IDPs from N Waziristan have been completed by the federal government, Radio Pakistan reported.
Abdul Qadir Baloch, minister for states and frontier regions, said that 100,000 people have been shifted to settled districts from North Waziristan Agency so far.
Tent villages have been established for the IDPs. Basic facilities such as clean drinking water, electricity and health service have also been arranged.
The same facilities would also be given to people who have been shifted to safer places within North Waziristan Agency.

Six terrorist hideouts including a training camp and an IED making factory around Hasokhel, North Waziristan Agency were destroyed by jet aircraft early morning today. Twenty-five foreign and local terrorists were killed in the strikes, according to a press release issued by ISPR.
The statement went on to add that the operation in North Waziristan Agency is progressing as per plan. “Last night three terrorists were killed while fleeing from the cordoned off area in Miramshah. One soldier got injured in exchange of fire.

Giving details about yesterday’s offensive, the ISPR press release states that 140 militants – mostly Uzbek – were killed in precise air strikes in Degan-Boya area of North Waziristan.
“Many East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) terrorists and their affiliates have also been killed in the strikes. It was a massive blow to the terrorists and one of their main communication centres has been dismantled,” the ISPR states.

Our defence correspondent Kamran Yousaf tells us that at least seven suspected militants were killed in the Shawal area in the first ground encounter between security forces and militants since the army moved into North Waziristan Agency.
A senior security official tells The Express Tribune that a shootout took place in early hours on Monday.
This is the first reported encounter between the army and militants on the ground as earlier militants were killed in air strikes.
Giving details about the operation, the official tells our defence correspondent that militants were surrounded by the army in the overnight raid with the intention to capture them alive. However, the official adds, the militants opened fired and were killed in the shootout.

According to the statement, eight hideouts of terrorists were destroyed and 105 terrorists, mostly Uzbek foreigners, were killed.
“As of now North Wazirastan Agency  has been isolated by deploying troops along its border with neighboring agencies and FATA Regions to block any move of terrorists in and out of the Agency,” said the statement, adding that within the agency, troops have moved and cordoned off all terrorists bases, including in the town of Mirali and Miramshah.
“Announcements will be made for local population to approach designated areas for their orderly and dignified evacuation out of the Agency. Meanwhile, aerial surveillance of the area is being carried out by own aerial surveillance platforms,” the statement added.

“The army is ready and citizens should remain calm army is prepared to deal with difficult situations and will help civilians move,” he said, adding that air and ground forces are fully ready to act and will bring complete peace to the area.
“We will complete the operation as soon as possible,” he added.
Asif said that the decision of the operation against terrorists reflects the wishes of people of the country.
In a statement on Sunday, he said the government fully tried to resolve the issue through dialogue. He said the decision of the operation is taken thoughtfully, keeping in view all options.
The defence minister said the operation is need of the hour and would continue till complete elimination of the enemies.
He said the Pakistani nation is with the armed forces of the country. The minister expressed confidence that the operation will be a success of our armed forces.

ISPR press release announces launch of military operation.
“DG ISPR has said that on the directions of the Government, Armed forces of Pakistan have launched a comprehensive operation against foreign and local terrorists who are hiding in sanctuaries in North Waziristan Agency. The operation has been named Zarb-e-Azb,” said the press release.
The ISPR statement went on to add that terrorists in North Waziristan had waged a war against the state of Pakistan and had been disrupting life in all its dimensions, stunting our economic growth and causing enormous loss of life and property. “They had also paralysed life within the agency and had perpetually terrorised the entire peace loving and patriotic local population,” the statement added.
“Our valiant armed forces have been tasked to eliminate these terrorists regardless of hue and colour, along with their sanctuaries. With the support of the entire nation, and in coordination with other state institutions and Law Enforcement Agencies, these enemies of the state will be denied space anywhere across the country. As always, armed forces of Pakistan will not hesitate in rendering any sacrifice for the motherland,” said the statement.
