US calls for immediate dialogue to end standoff in Bangladesh
US Secretary of State John Kerry has sent letters to the top political parties of Bangladesh urging to hold talks to end the current deadlock.
His letters come barely two weeks after United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged leaders of both major political alliances to find a way out of the impasse over the forthcoming 10th parliamentary election.
The US embassy in Dhaka told bdnews24.com on Monday that the letters have been handed over to the Prime Minister’s Office and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office on Sunday.
Kelly McCarthy, Press & Information Officer of the US embassy, told bdnews24.com that the Secretary of State “encouraged them to engage in constructive dialogue to find a way forward towards free, fair and credible elections”.
BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury on Monday told bdnews24.com that the letter from Kerry was delivered to party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s office on Sunday.
Shamsher Mobin said US Secretary of State has expressed his concern over the political crisis in the country ahead of the polls.
“Kerry also stressed on reaching an understanding through talks without any further delay as important for an acceptable elections with all parties participating.”
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Dan Mozena delivered the letter to the BNP chief’s office on Sunday.
He has also been to the PMO, but ruling Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif said he is not aware of Mozena reaching Kerry's letter to the Prime Minister's office.
