Iraq: Security Forces Open Fire on Sunni Demonstrators in North

Security forces fired on stone-throwing Sunni demonstrators in the northern city of Mosul on Friday, killing one and wounding five, according to Iraqi officials. The demonstrators were demanding the release of Sheikh Hussain al-Jubori, a local leader of antigovernment protests that have been going on inIraq for two months. He was arrested early in the day on suspicion of links to Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, the homegrown terrorist group. After the shootings, members of the mainly Sunni Iraqiya bloc held a news conference to denounce the government as “reckless,” and the minister of agriculture, Izzeddin al-Dolah, resigned, the second high-profile Sunni to do so this month.
